Explore the range of Veracity HIGHWIRE IP over COAX Devices available here at Comms Express.
High-Speed Ethernet Over Coax Video Cable
HIGHWIRE turns any analogue video cable into a high-speed network connection. This allows the replacement of analogue cameras with IP cameras without installation of any new cabling, which can save some 30-40% of the system cost.
Universal connections for coax, network and power, with no user set-up required, make installation easy and fast.
Long connection range
HIGHWIRE can provide a full-duplex 100BASE-T network connection, with no bandwidth restrictions, over up to 500 metres (1650 feet) of RG-11 cable, or 280 metres (930 feet) of CCTV-grade RG-59 cable.
Simply connect a single HIGHWIRE to each end of the coaxial cable, and the link will be established automatically with no configuration required.
Transparent to the network
The HIGHWIRE connection is invisible to Ethernet data and requires no MAC or IP address; to the camera the link looks like any other network cable.
peed, duplex and crossover are sensed on connection; no setting up is necessary.
Universal power input
HIGHWIRE can be powered by legacy 12 Volt DC or 24 Volt AC supplies. Connection is via a detachable screw terminal and the type and polarity of the supply are detected automatically.
An optional power supply is available for installations with no legacy power.
Practical installation
With absolutely no setting-up or configuration required, installation is simple, and HIGHWIREs compact dimensions allow it to be mounted inside a camera housing.
Optional wall-mounting brackets and a rack-mounting kit are available to suit the needs of each installation.

Applications:
IP Video
Reuse legacy cable when upgrading from analog to IP security.
Long range networking
Use HIGHWIRE as a cost-effective means to deploy network connections beyond 100 metres - for example a buried RG-11 cable can be used to deliver a network connection between buildings 500 metres apart.
Transportation
HIGHWIRE can be used on legacy coaxial cables found in rail transport or elsewhere, and its universal power input makes it well-suited to low-voltage installations.
Elevators and mechanisms
Because coaxial cable will coil and bend properly, unlike Cat 5 cable, HIGHWIRE provides an ideal means to provide network access to elevator carriages, for VoIP, security, lift panel and other devices.
Anywhere there's coax!
HIGHWIRE has been deployed over all types of video cable, radar, TV antenna and satellite downlinks, armored steel cables, you name it. 50 ohm coax or cables of other impedance can normally be used without any modification to the unit.

Fast Ethernet and POE power over coax video cable
HIGHWIRE POWERSTAR lets you install IP cameras easily, quickly, and reliably, without the disruption and expense of installing new cable.
Support for your camera is assured, thanks to HIGHWIRE's unique full-rate Ethernet over Coax technology, which has been tested and trusted by thousands of IP installers worldwide since it launched as an industry first in June 2006.
And now with POE over Coax, you can deliver up to 25 watts of POE power to the camera as well, eliminating the complexity of installing local power supplies.
Simply add power
With no configuration or measurement required, installation of HIGHWIRE Powerstar is as straightforward as plugging it in.
Two models are used, as shown in the diagram below. The BASE unit receives POE power and transmits it down the coax. The CAMERA unit receives power from the coax and delivers up to full POE Plus power to the IP camera.
If POE is insufficient at the camera end of the cable, just connect an optional power supply.
Installer friendly
For fast installation and guaranteed performance, HIGHWIRE Powerstar features Veracity's unique SAFEVIEW display.
SAFEVIEW provides an instant and easy-to-understand confirmation of network and power status right across the cable, with no need to access remote equipment to check connections.
Meanwhile, safe and compliant detection of POE equipment and POE over coax compatibility ensures correct operation, with no risk of damage to non-POE or legacy analog equipment.
Reliability assured
Because the length and quality of installed coaxial cable is hard to predict or measure, it is important to have confidence that the cable you are upgrading has the capacity to deliver continuous, reliable power to the new IP camera.
However, thanks to HIGHWIRE POWERSTAR's ultra low-power design and efficient power delivery, even the lowest grade of cheap RG-59 will support a 10 watt IP camera at any range likely to be found in a legacy installation. And once connected, the SAFEVIEW power display instantly reaffirms that the actual power available to the camera is sufficient.
For predictable network performance, HIGHWIRE's proven technology delivers full network bandwidth, right to the limits of range. And secure screw-terminal DC connections, or the option of using a UPS-backed POE source, provide the last link in assuring continuous power delivery.

The HIGHWIRE Powerstar product family offers reliable power delivery and long-range extension even over low-grade coaxial cable and now enables direct replacement of existing analogue video encoders to allow cost-effective upgrade to IP cameras
Existing Video Encoders
Many CCTV installations made the first step to IP video by using analogue video encoders to digitise their existing analogue cameras and stream IP video onto their network. This allowed the analogue cameras running over existing coaxial cables to be used with modern network video recorders (NVRs) and to be streamed anywhere on the network (to a video wall, operator screen or display monitor for example). Video encoders were frequently used to get the video onto a network at the most convenient point thus avoiding having to run coax cable very long distances all the way to the equipment room end. Digitising and networking the video also added some flexibility to the system in terms of how the video data was routed and used, and indeed this is part of the power of IP Video systems.
Legacy Video Encoders
Existing video encoders come in many forms, but by far the most common is the stand-alone four-channel encoder, as manufactured by hundreds of different companies around the world. All have very similar characteristics: Four BNC connections for the coax cables, a network connection and a power connection.
PTZ Control/Audio
Some video encoders also had RS232 or RS485 ports for controlling analogue PTZ cameras. Of course, such serial connections are not required for IP PTZ cameras, as all control signals go through the Ethernet network connection along with the digital video. Likewise, some analogue encoders had audio I/O, but again, separate audio connections are not required for IP cameras, as the signals are incorporated into the network data and recorded by the NVR. HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 4 directly replaces the analogue encoder unit.
Direct Encoder Replacement
HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 4 builds on the market-leading HIGHWIRE range of Ethernet-over-coax (EOC) adaptors from Veracity, and is designed as a direct replacement for legacy analogue video encoders.
EOC Base and Camera Units
The legacy analogue encoder - shown in the diagram - is replaced by a HIGHWIRE Base 4 unit and the coax cables are connected to four separate single-channel HIGHWIRE Powerstar Camera adaptors. Note that Duo and Quad Camera adaptors are also available. The low-resolution, locally powered analogue cameras are replaced by high-resolution POE powered IP cameras. A Gigabit Ethernet uplink connection on the HIGHWIRE Base 4 ensures there is no network bandwidth limit on available image quality and resolution.
Automatic connection
As soon as the power is supplied to the Base 4 unit, a connection is established automatically with the Camera units, the IP cameras are powered up and the camera IP addresses will be available on the network. The HIGHWIRE units require no configuration, do not require IP address settings and are completely transparent to the network.
Recommended Power Supplies
There are two PSU options available for HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 4 units. They are 57V DC to provide the maximum power and distance possible within the POE standard. (IEEE 802.8af and 802.3at) The options provide 40W or 80W. The 40W unit provides 10W per channel over the coax on the Base 4 unit, which is sufficient for most static IP cameras. The 80W unit provides up to 20W per channel on Base 4.
Applications:
HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 4 directly replaces the analogue encoder unit.
Install HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 4 in car parks, stations, shopping centres, retail outlets, hospitals, prisons, sports centres or anywhere that has legacy coax cable and analogue cameras that you want to upgrade to IP Video cameras.
The LINKLOCK variants of HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 4 and Base 8 offer a “tamper-detection” function for critical network links. For example, this could be IP cameras located outside of secure buildings which may be vulnerable to hacking, since the very location of the devices could allow physical access and therefore an external link back into the organisation’s network.

Proven Technology
Veracity’s HIGHWIRE technology has been proven in tens of thousands of installations over many years, delivering high-reliability full 100Base-TX Ethernet in all conditions. This offers consistent, predictable, IP video network performance even with today’s high resolution HD and 4K IP cameras, delivering a full speed over 300m of RG59 cable, and 500m over RG11.
Multi-Channel Rack Mount Unit
Base 8 integrates eight HIGHWIRE channels and a gigabit switch into a single unit. It is specifically designed to allow rack-mounting of up to four units in 1U, giving 32 channels per U. Veracity’s unique 57V rack-mounted POE power supply accessory can be mounted in the same 1U.
Cost-effective Network Connection
The integration of a Gigabit switch reduces the number of main switch ports required to connect many IP video cameras. Thus each HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 8 unit requires only one main switch port, or 4 network ports for 32 channels. Each Base 8 unit also has a rear mounted SFP socket for an optional SFP fibre Ethernet module.
Base and Camera Units
In the diagram below, the HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 8 unit is connected to 8 legacy coaxial cable links. At the camera ends, there are single-channel HIGHWIRE Powerstar Camera units connected to each link. The original analogue cameras are replaced by new IP cameras which are connected to HIGHWIRE Camera units. The Base 8 unit is powered by a Veracity 57V PSU and power is delivered up the coax to power the HIGHWIRE Camera units which, in turn, power the IP cameras.
Simple Installation
With no need to configure IP addresses, set DIP switches, or pair units, installing HIGHWIRE Powerstar is straightforward. As soon as power is applied, the IP cameras will power up and their IP addresses will become available on the network. The zero configuration HIGHWIRE units are completely network transparent.
Multiple Channels per Coax
HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 8 is compatible with Veracity’s Powerstar Duo and Quad Camera units, connecting multiple IP cameras over a single coax. For example, an obsolete analogue PTZ camera could be replaced by four low-cost static IP cameras using a Powerstar Quad unit.
Recommended Power Supplies
Veracity power supplies for POE are all 57V DC devices, to provide the maximum power and distance possible within the POE standard (802.3af and 802.3at). Our 1U rack-mounted 57V 8.8A power supply is specifically designed for Veracity’s IP Transmission products, including HIGHWIRE Base units. The Base 8 rack mount kit can be assembled together with the 1U PSU to provide a complete power-and-32-channel-EOC* solution in 1U.
Redundant Power Supply Configuration
Veracity’s 1U POE power supplies are designed to allow redundant power configurations for maximum reliability. Pairs of units (in 2U) may be cross linked with an optional cable assembly to allow full power to be delivered to the Base units, even in the event of a failure of one of the power supplies.

And secure screw-terminal DC connections, or the option of using a UPS-backed POE source, provide the last link in assuring continuous power delivery.

pgrading to IP
Delivering full network connectivity and standardised, centrally-sourced power without recabling, HIGHWIRE removes many of the barriers to upgrading systems from analogue to digital.
New installations
With the familiarity of coaxial cable and the reliability and cost advantages of POE, HIGHWIRE Powerstar is an effective choice for the installation of new IP video systems where cable runs may be very long or inaccessible. The ability to convert coax into a network connection without requiring power has many advantages in upgrading CATV or satellite systems in hotels or other buildings, among other applications. HIGHWIRE technology has been successfully used with 50 ohm cable and many other non-video types.
