HIGHWIRE Powerstar's unique ultra low-power design and efficient power delivery enables long range extension even over the lowest-grade cable, such as the high-resistance copperclad steel (CCS) types found in many legacy installations. This means that legacy coax upgrades can be planned with confidence, while a quick check of the SAFEVIEW™ power display reaffirms that the devices’ connection will continue to be reliable, whatever the cable used. Reliable power delivery is also ensured at the source, where either dependable screw terminal connections or a UPS-backed POE supply can be used. For predictable network operation with no restrictions, HIGHWIRE delivers a full 200Mbit/s of bandwidth at 300m (1000 ft) of RG-59 or 500m (1600 ft) of RG-11 coax.

    Key Features of Veracity VHW-HWPS-CBB

    • Delivers Ethernet and PoE over existing coax cabling
    • Compact design for installation inside camera backboxes
    • Supports IEEE 802.3af/at PoE with up to 25W output
    • Maintains full 100Base-TX network performance
    • Plug-and-play setup with no configuration required
    • Compatible with HIGHWIRE Powerstar base units
    • Includes LED indicators for quick status checks

    Multichannel Options

Multichannel HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base devices are available in 4 and 8 channel models, with full POE Plus output per port.

    Simply Add Power

With no need to configure IP addresses, set DIP switches, or make awkward measurements and calculations, installing HIGHWIRE Powerstar is so straight forward, all you do is plug it in. In the most simple implementation, the BASE device receives POE power from a standard POE switch or injector and transmits it down the coax. The CAMERA device receives this power and forwards it on to the IP camera. No external power cabling is required, and all of the detection and setup occurs automatically. Designed For Camera Housings HIGHWIRE Powerstar Backbox has connectors on flexible flying leads for easier mounting inside camera housings, allowing the connectors to be moved into convenient positions. Note that Backbox is powered by POE only (no external DC power option).

    POE-over-Coax™ Range

HIGHWIRE Powerstar delivers reliable power at long range, even over low grade CCS cable, and SAFEVIEW™ confirms it automatically on installation. In most cases the full 25 watts required by the most powerful POE Plus IP cameras is available. The table below shows the range achievable by cable type, power source and camera wattage.

    Installer friendly

HIGHWIRE Powerstar features Veracity's unique SAFEVIEW™ display, to provide IP camera installers with an IMAGINATION | INNOVATION | INTEGRATION DATASHEET instant and very easy-to-understand confirmation of correct operation from either end of the cable. For example, the network link/activity and POE status of the IP camera can be viewed from the BASE device, saving the time of accessing remote equipment.

Cable length and quality can be hard to predict or measure, especially in legacy upgrade scenarios, which is why SAFEVIEW™ includes a reassuring bar - graph display of the POE power available, and a warning if the camera's requirement approaches it.

True POE Plus detection means that all POE (IEEE 802.3af) and POE Plus (IEEE 802.3at) cameras are fully supported, and non-POE equipment can be safely connected as well.

Careful POE-over-coax™ detection and management is also employed, to prevent accidental damage to legacy equipment and allow operation with other HIGHWIRE models.

    Overview

HIGHWIRE POWERSTAR lets you install IP cameras easily, quickly, and reliably, without the disruption and expense of installing new cable.

Support for your camera is assured, thanks to HIGHWIRE's unique full-rate Ethernet over Coax technology, which has been tested and trusted by thousands of IP installers worldwide since it launched as an industry-first in June 2006.

And now with POE over Coax, you can deliver up to 25 watts of POE power to the camera as well, eliminating the complexity of installing local power supplies.

    Simply add power

With no configuration or measurement required, installation of HIGHWIRE Powerstar is as straightforward as plugging it in.

Two models are used, as shown in the diagram below. The BASE unit receives POE power and transmits it down the coax. The CAMERA unit receives power from the coax and delivers up to full POE Plus power to the IP camera.

If POE is insufficient at the camera end of the cable, just connect an optional power supply.

    Installer friendly

For fast installation and guaranteed performance, HIGHWIRE Powerstar features Veracity's unique SAFEVIEW display.

SAFEVIEW provides an instant and easy-to-understand confirmation of network and power status right across the cable, with no need to access remote equipment to check connections.

Meanwhile, safe and compliant detection of POE equipment and POE over coax compatibility ensures correct operation, with no risk of damage to non-POE or legacy analogue equipment.

    Reliability assured

Because the length and quality of the installed coaxial cable is hard to predict or measure, it is important to have confidence that the cable you are upgrading has the capacity to deliver continuous, reliable power to the new IP camera.

However, thanks to HIGHWIRE POWERSTAR's ultra-low-power design and efficient power delivery, even the lowest grade of cheap RG-59 will support a 10 watt IP camera at any range likely to be found in a legacy installation. And once connected, the SAFEVIEW power display instantly reaffirms that the actual power available to the camera is sufficient.

For predictable network performance, HIGHWIRE's proven technology delivers full network bandwidth, right to the limits of the range. And secure screw-terminal DC connections, or the option of using a UPS-backed POE source, provide the last link in assuring continuous power delivery.

    Upgrading to IP

Delivering full network connectivity and standardised, centrally-sourced power without re-cabling, HIGHWIRE removes many of the barriers to upgrading systems from analogue to digital.

    New installations

With the familiarity of coaxial cable and the reliability and cost advantages of POE, HIGHWIRE Powerstar is an effective choice for the installation of new IP video systems where cable runs may be very long or inaccessible. The ability to convert coax into a network connection without requiring power has many advantages in upgrading CATV or satellite systems in hotels or other buildings, among other applications. HIGHWIRE technology has been successfully used with 50-ohm cable and many other non-video types.
