Fibre optic communication networks have revolutionised the way information (data, image and voice) is transmitted across the globe. Due to the numerous advantages that a fibre optic cable offers, telecommunication companies around the world are replacing the traditional copper wire system with fibre optic. In optical fibre technology, multimode fibre is optical fibre that is designed to carry multiple light rays or modes concurrently, each at a slightly different reflection angle within the optical fibre core. Multimode fibre transmission is used for relatively short distances because the modes tend to disperse over longer lengths (this is called modal dispersion).

In optical fibre technology, single mode fibre is optical fibre that is designed for the transmission of a single ray or mode of light as a carrier and is used for long-distance signal transmission. For short distances, multimode fibre is used.

A fibre pigtail is a single, usually unbuffered optical fibre lead that has fibre connector on one end and a length of exposed fibre at the other.
