Fibre OWL 7 series bi-directional certifiers are ideal for the fibre optic professional who requires accurate standards-based certification of fibre links (including the configuration of custom standards) and professional certification reports as proof of a job well done.
Each Fiber OWL 7 BIDI certifier comes with a matched set of testers (called a METER and INJECTOR), both of which are N.I.S.T. Traceable.
Each unit includes an OPM port (also called "detector" or "receiver") and a source port.
Each set comes in a hard-shell carrying case and includes protective rubber boots, certificates of NIST-traceability, and a USB flash drive with free OWLView certification software, USB driver, and operation manual.
Each BiDi certifier comes with a matching set of 2 units, a master and remote.
Testing two fibres at a time:
Fibre OWL 7 BIDI certifiers have two dual-fibre test modes
PAIR: both fibres in a pair are certified in only one direction
Cabling standards only require fibres to be tested in one direction, so PAIR mode is the fastest way to certify fibre pairs according to cabling standards.
Fibre OWL 7 BIDI certifiers have two dual-fibre test modes
BIDI: both fibres in a pair are certified at two wavelengths in both directions
Bi-directional testing is not required by standards, but many end-users will request BIDI testing anyway. BIDI test mode is more thorough but is also more complicated and time-consuming.
Fibre OWL 7 series testers can also be used as a traditional one-fibre certifier (when used with a separate stand-alone light source), or as a stand-alone optical power meter.

In a time when it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify equipping an entire technical staff with high-end equipment, companies are even more cost-conscious than before. These companies outfit a majority of their installation/repair personnel with OWLTrek II OTDRs and set aside a few high-end “expert” devices for high-priority jobs.
The OWLTrek II OTDR may be pocket-sized, but the large 2.8" high-resolution colour LCD display can show even the longest traces with ease. And, for greater viewing flexibility and trace detail, OWL has implemented state-of-the-art MEMS technology which "flips" the high-resolution colour LCD display between portrait and landscape mode automatically. In landscape mode, a wider viewing area means greater viewing detail. Automatic event location - This is an advanced feature normally found only inexpensive, high-end OTDRs. The OWLTrek II OTDR now brings this feature to the entry-level OTDR market. While in event location mode, the OWLTrek II OTDR marks events on the trace, has an event table showing the location, type, reflectance level, and loss of each event, and auto-zooms to the selected event.
OWLTrek II single-mode OTDRs are capable of finding breaks in single-mode optical fibres up to 80 miles to within +/- 6 feet. Additional splices and other loss producing events will limit end distance estimates. This is true for all OTDRs. However, passive single-mode Telco links are almost always less than 12 miles long. At this distance, OWLTrek II OTDRs have break finding capability of about +/- 1 meter! In fact, increased dynamic range is actually a disadvantage in almost all cases because of the increased OTDR cost.
OWLView software allows the user to download stored traces from the OWLTrek II OTDR to a PC.
