The Ethernet protocol is now 40 years old, with the technology turning into a vital piece of kit for data cabling.

Its deployment over copper turned it into a highly successful piece of equipment, and it is now used in the telecoms industry regularly. Many people rely on Ethernet cables in order to maintain a strong internet connection.

In the event of Wi-Fi going down or running slowly, Ethernet offers a way for people to access the internet, reducing downtime significantly in the process.

Henry Bohannon, senior director and head of Ethernet product management at Tata Communications, told the Inquirer: “People associated it with a being a LAN technology so they weren't confident it was robust in the WAN."

Mr Bohannon noted that the technology has gained a lot more acceptance, with people seeing the same types of SLA in terms of guarantees of availability, uptime and time to repair.

Written by Steve Wilkins for Comms Express, number one for fibre cables on the net.

A new data centre is to launch in Slough, Berkshire later this year.

Set to be introduced in October 2013, the 20,000 sq ft facility will boast 9,300 sq ft of data hall space with provision for 120 high density server racks, and is to be built by web hosting specialist Tsohost.

The facility is located close to available power and fibre optic lines, while a purpose built substation will offer reliable grid power to the data centre.

Technical director Adam Smith said: “We are experiencing massive growth and therefore building our own data centre infrastructure was the next logical step. We have been planning this since 2012 and, when the ideal location on the Slough Trading Estate came up, with ample connectivity and power, it was the perfect opportunity.”

All pieces of equipment are fed through separate UPS clusters as part of the company’s 2N architecture, which eliminates single failure points to offer uninterrupted uptime.

Written by Steve Wilkins for Comms Express, number one for fibre cables on the net.

Nordics proven as safe location for data centres - Network Accessories

The Nordic region is becoming a safe area for data centres, one study has found.

The Cushman and Wakefield and hurleypalmerfatt Data Centre Risk Index placed the area third behind the US and UK, with Sweden increasing its ranking by five points to become the third safest location covered by the research.

On the other hand, Norway climbed to eighth place and Finland stayed in ninth, highlighting how popular the area has become for the technology. Only Iceland dropped points in the study, which was due to a lack of connectivity in the country.

The list is revealed every year, assessing countries based on risks related to energy cost, ease of political stability, labour, energy security, sustainability and other criteria.

Britain retained its second position thanks to its level of connectivity, while Germany finished fourth, but lost points as a result of taxation and labour costs.

Cushman and Wakefield EMEA data center partner Keith Inglis said: “The Nordics must be seen as a legitimate location in the global arena, where the latency and regulatory arguments are less important when considering where best to site operations.

“Going forward, we would reasonably expect the region to secure an increased market share but to improve, further investment is required in international connectivity. If the Nordics fails to address this then Germany, the Netherlands and the UK will continue to see the most activity in EMEA.”

Poland was one of the surprising countries in the report, rising five points to 17th as a result of low corporation tax, cost of labour and low risk from natural disaster, making it a useful place to introduce intelligent server cabinet solutions.

Japan is one country that fell considerably this year, dropping six points to fall to 26th place, due to risks relating to the fallout of its most recent earthquake.

Written by Steve Wilkins for Comms Express, number one for fibre cables on the net.

More than 40 per cent of organisations are planning to converge their data centre platforms, a new study has found.

NextiraOne has completed a survey of businesses, finding that there is a growing need for Unified Computing Platforms due to IT directors’ focus on increasing performance while decreasing space and power requirements.

It was also found that more than 40 per cent of respondents are introducing or planning to introduce converged, unified platforms for their data centre and cloud requirements.

The survey was targeted at IT and data centre decision makers in public and private sector organisations across the UK, with respondents being asked to provide their opinion on topics including their use of cloud computing and other outsourcing options.

Forty-four per cent of respondents are planning to use public or hybrid cloud services, whereas 57 per cent admitted that it took too long to be able to provision new server or storage capacity.

Geraint Davies, NextiraOne’s head of business development, data centre, said: “These findings confirm what we have been hearing directly from our customers. The survey shows that the industry is at the tipping point of a massive change as organisations streamline their infrastructure and move from silos containing storage, networking and servers towards Unified Computing Platforms.

“The new generation of Unified Computing Platforms combines storage, networking, servers and hardware, replacing multiple hardware appliances by combining best of breed technologies from industry leaders.”

He went on to say that Unified Computing Platforms enable virtualised servers and applications to take less time than previous options.

The technology acts as a single infrastructure, simplifying the process of adopting cloud computing for organisations with small IT teams who do not have the resources required to manage numerous pieces of network equipment.

Written by Steve Wilkins for Comms Express, number one for fibre cables on the net.
