Ethernet remains the most pervasive networking technology within the data communications market, it has been claimed.

According to a new report from Bishop & Associates, released by The Market Publishers, fibre channel and InfiniBand continue to lag behind in second and third place.

However, the report predicts that InfiniBand will surpass fibre channel over the coming 12 months, due to its increasing penetration into the high performance computing sector.

The technology's adoption into low-latency applications like financial trading is also helping to encourage uptake, it has been reported.

But still, by 2015, it will only be about one-fifth the size of the Ethernet cables market, Bishop & Associates said.

Last week, Saar Gillai, chief technology officer at HP Networking, predicted increased demand for higher bandwidth networks during 2012.

Speaking to EnterpriseNetworkingPlanet, he said more companies will be looking to deploy 40GbE and 100GbE Ethernet solutions in the coming 12 months.

News provided by Comms Express, number one for networking news on the net

Companies have been advised to get their structured cabling right to ensure the smooth running of their IT equipment.

An article written for Voice & Data Online points out that a well organised structured cabling system can help to minimise downtime.

It states that the majority of network related issues reported by businesses are down to faults in the cable infrastructure.

Getting structured cabling right is therefore essential, particularly in a world where bandwidth-hungry applications are become increasingly commonplace.

But companies not only need to consider their current cabling needs, the article states. They must also think about their future requirements.

"Installing a cabling infrastructure is a one-time investment and should have a maximum life of ten to 15 years," the piece explains.

"Therefore it has to be future-proofed and should support three generations for a better data transmission and a reliable performance."

News provided by Comms Express, number one for network cables on the net

Internet service providers (ISPs) should not have to act as a police force in order to crack down on illegal file sharing, ISPreview.co.uk has stated, which may interest businesses which use cat5e patch panels.

Mark Jackson, editor-in-chief at the website, commented that proposals from the government that would require ISPs to share the cost of protecting against copyright infringement is "deeply unfair".

"ISPs have argued long and hard for a beneficiary pays principle, which would see rights holders shoulder 100 per cent of the costs. As a result of this move, the vast majority of innocent internet users in the UK will have to pay higher prices for their broadband," he insisted.

On the subject of requiring ISPs to watch out for illegal downloads, Mr Jackson pointed out that if it was that simple, broadband providers would already be doing it.

"There are also legal issues with intercepting the content of a private transfer, which is something that only the police should be allowed to do," he added.

The Digital Economy Act is set to be debated further in both houses of parliament.

News provided by Comms Express, number one for cat5e patch panels on the net.
