Network equipment manufacturer Sommer Cables has launched a brand new Cat7 lead.

The firm's Excelsior Classique 1 series has been dubbed "probably the fastest network RJ45 patch cable in the world".

Sommer Cables' latest addition to its RJ45 lead series is suitable for both digital video and audio. It can also cope with other ultrafast 10Gbps data demands and conforms with the Fast Ethernet protocols.

Commenting on the high standards employed at Sommer Cables' manufacturing facilities to L&Si Online, the company claimed: "For the cable confectioning process we use only single high-grade components of no-compromise quality.

"The mounted full-metal RJ45 Cat6a connectors have a special bushing for large cable cross sections which are indispensable for a 10Gbps transmission."

Recently, Analog Devices unveiled a new integrated circuit specifically designed to address problems of skew during video transmission down Cat7, Cat6 or Cat5 leads.

Meanwhile, the firm claims the new device consumes 50 per cent less power when compared with rival products.

Ethernet cables are best for home networking - Cable

People considering connecting their TVs, set-top boxes and DVD players to a home network should consider using standard Ethernet cables, it has been claimed.

According to Investor's Business Daily writer Ken Spencer Brown, the technology, which in the past has been used for local area network connections, is the best way to achieve high speed home networking on a budget.

He said: "Just plug the Ethernet cable into your home router on the one side and, on the other side, into any device you want to connect to your home network."

Mr Brown said the major downside to using standard Ethernet cables was that they are often ugly and users will have to find a way of hiding the leads.

He suggested installing structured cabling in the walls of a property if the option is available to avoid the tangle of wires that can result from a home network.

Earlier this year, Netgear launched its Home Theatre Internet Connection Kit, which is part of the firm's award-winning network equipment range.

Analog Devices has introduced a new integrated circuit that addresses the issue of skew during video data transmission.

The new device can clean signals sent down standard Cat7, Cat6 or Cat5 cables and is suitable for high-definition video transmissions.

According to the firm, its new AD8120 triple video delay line integrated device consumers 50 per cent less power than products produced by rival network equipment companies.

It has a bandwidth of 150MHz and comes with a built-in 50-nanosecond total delay.

"Skew, or arrival time mismatch, between video signals occurs during video transmission in unshielded twisted pair cables due to the different twist rates that are used for each pair," Analog Devices claimed in a statement.

Recently, copper and fibre optic lead manufacturer Brand Rex claimed that unshielded Cat6 cables are for more susceptible to electromagnetic interference than their shielded counterparts.

According to Brand Rex, the results of its Cat6 10BASE-T gigabit Ethernet tests came as a complete surprise to the firm.
