NAS sales 'to reach 13 million by 2012'

Sales of network attached storage (NAS) in the United States are likely to reach 13 million over the next four years, according to research from Parks Associates.

Its report, titled Home Servers and Consumer Storage: Analysis and Forecasts, predicts strong growth in digital content libraries between now and 2012.

Existing storage solutions are ill-equipped to handle large amounts of music, video and digital images and consumers will demand increasingly powerful devices, it claims.

Jane Shields, research analyst at Parks Associates, said: "Soon the average broadband household will need close to a terabyte of storage for their media collections on PCs, portable devices and DVRs."

Network attached storage sales are therefore expected to increase in line with digital content growth, she added.

However, Ms Shields warned that storage capacity is not the only thing consumers will be looking for in network attached storage devices.

Capabilities such as file allocation, searching and media sharing will all be in demand and the network industry will have to adapt their offerings accordingly.

Meanwhile, D-Link, whose products include switches and other networking equipment, has launched a new network storage enclosure. The DNS-343 allows users to store, share, and safeguard documents, music, videos and photos.

News brought to you by Comms Express, number one for network industry news on the net.

Network attached storage market to see continued growth

The network attached storage market is expected to see continued growth in the coming years as home network users demand extra storage space.

According to ABI Research, network storage will be the fastest growing core home networking category over the next five years.

The organisation predicts that the global network storage market will be worth just over $1.4 billion (£700 million) by 2012, up from around $400 million (£200 million) today.

"We think overall adoption of consumer network storage will grow significantly from the ten per cent of home network owners today who use network attached storage," said ABI's research director Michael Wolf.

He pointed out that increasing numbers of consumers are likely to need more backup and central storage for digital files in the future and the network attached storage market will be there to meet the demand.

According to Digital Arts Online, network attached storage is essential for small to medium-sized businesses as it allows them to share projects and files in one centrally-accessed place.

News brought to you by Comms Express, number one for network attached storage on the net.

Adder launches new KVM solution

KVM switch manufacturer Adder has launched a new KVM solution which it claims is the first extender in the world to send both USB and DVI signals over one CAT6 cable.

The AdderLink X-DVI is designed for use in industries where superior video resolutions are required, such as broadcast and medical. Graphic designers and animators will also benefit from the new solution.

Nigel Dickens, chief technical officer at Adder, explained that up until now manufacturers have only offered consumers two KVM solutions for extenders with DVI.

These either used fibre optic cables which were expensive, or used cheaper copper which compromised video quality.

"The X-DVI offers a no compromise DVI solution at a low price, showcasing Adder's engineering expertise in a product that will be ideally suited for applications that require faultless digital video performance," he remarked.

Earlier this year, connectivity solutions manufacturer ATEN International showcased the world'sfirst LCD KVM switch with fingerprint recognition.

News brought to you by Comms Express, number one for KVM solutions on the net.

Businesses around the world are continuing to purchase network attached storage to store vast amounts of data and the market is booming.

This is the view of business journalist Daniel Sorid, who points out that while network attached storage has long been attractive to businesses it is now taking off in the home.

Writing in the New York Times he says external hard drives are becoming more user-friendly, allowing non-commercial customers to enjoy their benefits as well.

He points out that several manufacturers of network attached storage are bringing forward a "new generation" of external hard drives that connect to home networks.

They allow users to store data such as text documents and spreadsheets as well as pictures, videos and music files from multiple computers around the home on a single device.

Mike Wolf, director of ABI Research, told Teleclick.ca that home networking is no longer an "early adopter technology" and more households are setting up networks that include PCs, laptops, games consoles and Wi-Fi enabled mobile phones.

Demand for network attached storage among non-business consumers is therefore expected to grow considerably.

News brought to you by Comms Express, number one for network attached storage on the net.
