Network equipment manufacturer Keithley Instruments has introduced a new range of cabling kits which allow for simpler current voltage and capacitance voltage testing.

The cables are compatible with Keithley's Model 4200 Semiconductor Characterisation System, as well as a plethora of other testing products.

High performance triaxial wiring ensures that they are ideally suited for businesses who need to quickly switch between different test types and voltages.

Two versions of the cable kit are available, one optimised for use with Keithley's own probes and a generic version.

Usually measuring voltage, capacitance and carrying out pulse testing requires three different wiring setups, but the new triaxial cabling kits get around this problem allowing a wide range of test to be carried out at the flip of a switch.

Meanwhile, GAO Fibre Optics has unveiled a new cost-efficient meter aimed at engineers, which can be used on installation, debugging and maintenance projects on fibre optic leads.

High speed internet users may soon have to pay depending on how much they download and how much bandwidth they consume, it has been claimed.

The new tariffs may replace existing flat rate service fees which offer unlimited connection time, according to redorbit.com.

Network equipment which allows internet service providers to monitor downloads has caused many to design and test metered access billing schemes, similar to those used by mobile phone companies, the website stated.

Meanwhile, Forrester Research senior analyst Bobby Tulsiani told MSNBC: "If you wanted to watch TV over the Internet in 2000, you had to be willing to take much less content than cable."

"Now you get much, much more. Of course, you're still watching on your PC, not your TV, so there are tradeoffs, but they are tradeoffs many people are willing to make,” he added.

BT has just launched a new broadband and phone package which combines BT Total Broadband Option 1 and BT's One Plan call package.

Powering servers 'can be less complex' - Power Leads and Extentions

Powering hundreds of servers in a data centre can be made less complicated by using a two-stage distribution technique, it has been claimed.

According to Gary Anderson, marketing manager for AC power systems at Emerson Network Power, a two-stage system uses a server rack mounted power distribution unit, which can power an entire rack but needs connecting by just one power lead.

"Each cabinet connects to the 208V PDU with one cable and then distributes power to individual server racks. So, you have fewer cables to buy and install," he said.

Mr Anderson added that fewer cables – including power and RJ45 leads - could result in improved air flow within a data centre and therefore reduced power consumption.

The server cabinets do not house a transformer, so there is only a small amount of power loss in the connecting cables, he concluded.

According to research by Jones Lang LaSalle, the majority of data centre operators have systems in place to measure energy efficiency.

Magnetic tape storage could be making a comeback in data centres as it offers reliability, it has been claimed.

According to Enterprise Systems' Mark Ferelli, tape technology has been consigned to the history books earlier than it should have been by some industry experts and at the moment is going through something of a Renaissance.

"Tape technology is already helping to keep the data center green as utility bills rise," Mr Ferelli said.

He added that the issue of energy consumption will become a more prominent issue as electricity prices rise, but solving efficiency problems at the server level is not the only thing to consider.

Mr Ferelli concluded that efficiency is one of the largest challenges facing data centre managers today, but companies should avoid the wholesale replacement of older equipment.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, data centres are responsible for 1.5 per cent of energy consumption in the US.
