Here at Comms we love Facebook and Twitter, in fact we’re really embracing social media in all of its forms. We’ve found that it’s a wonderful way to engage and interact with our customers and the world outside of Comms Express, and it would seem that the Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church agrees – yes the Pope has joined Twitter!

@pontifex received a million followers before the Pope made his debut; such was the interest in reading the sacred messages of Pope Benedict. The first tweet read, “Dear friends,” he wrote, “I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart.”

Eight accounts were set up in his name, in eight different languages. However for those following don’t expect a follow back, he follows just 7 accounts and these are his remaining 7 language accounts.

His spokesman at the Vatican, Federico Lombardi spoke of the determination of the Pope to embrace Twitter. “We have seen how much information and how many voices are out there and we wanted to be present and introduce a positive and religious message,”

That said I confess (see what I did there?!) my initial feeling was that the Vatican were treading into a minefield but of course the reality is that used correctly Twitter will be a wonderful opportunity. It is said that Twitter has a team of people all gainfully employed to bring in public figures to the Twitter fold. And I fully expect others to follow the Popes lead. Why not when you consider that Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama both tweet.

We hesitated before joining and embracing the whole social media arena but we’ve enjoyed ourselves thus far and for the New Year we shall be joining our aforementioned famous friends and really making social media part of the Comms Express strategy going forwards.

Until next time…
