Vertiv Innovations to enable the reduction of environmental impacts header image

A lot has changed in the past ten years, especially when it comes to data centers.

The practices and technologies on offer today to data center operators have come on immensely, and there’s no doubt that this trend will continue.

Vertiv keeps themselves at the forefront of this, continuously deploying and planning new assets to better data centers around the world.

Here are some of the newer technologies going that increase asset utilization, maximize efficiency, reduce emissions, and minimize water consumption.

Intelligent Power Management

With new controls and more intelligent equipment, data center operators can improve the efficiency and utilization of their critical power systems.
One new method Vertiv have implemented is their ‘eco mode’ operation. With this, a UPS system operates in bypass mode when the utility is delivering acceptable power, eliminating the energy required to condition power. If the power quality degrades it will then switch to double-conversion mode.

Renewable Energy

Utilizing renewable energy would be a powerful tool in reducing carbon emissions.
How would this work? Renewable energy, such as wind or solar, could be generated to power data centers when the power production capacity is high enough to do so. Then, if the energy levels drop below the requirement, fuel cells can then take over.

Lithium-ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are quickly rising in popularity due to their competitive costs, improved reliability, and reduced replacement needs. Not only this, but they could also play a role in the transition to renewable energy with the potential to sell excess energy back to the grid with dynamic grid support capabilities.

Water and Energy-efficient Thermal Management

Thermal management systems can play a significant role in energy efficiency of your data center.
Two methods Vertiv have implemented to improve the energy efficiency is through water and energy efficient thermal management.
Water-efficient systems can reduce indirect emissions by optimising strategies such as increasing air and water temperatures, system-level control, and introducing adiabatic technologies.
For operators aiming to reduce or eliminate water use, water-free direct expansion (DX) systems are the perfect option.

Liquid Cooling

There are three tyes of liquid cooling deployments being utilized by Vertiv:
Rear-door heat exchangers – These bring liquid to the back rather than directly to servers. They are a proven approach for leveraging the high thermal transfer property of fluids to cool racks.
Direct-to-chip liquid cooling – This removes heat from the hottest components by taking water or refrigerant directly to the server.
Immersion cooling – This submerges compute equipment in a non-conductive fluid. Where the liquid is in direct contact with the equipment it doesn’t need support from air-cooling systems.

Real-time Visibility

Gain more precise control with greater visibility into your operations. With temperature sensors you can monitor the operating systems of your data center and potentially save up to 4% on your energy through temperature adjustments.
