What is an FTP?

In the world of cabling technology, FTP stands for foil twisted pair. Alongside shielded twisted pair (FTP) and unshielded twisted pair (UTP), it is one of the three main types of twisted-pair wiring.

This kind of cable is made up of two conductors twisted together and then surrounded by an aluminum foil shield. This structure reduces crosstalk and electromagnetic interference due to the twisted conductors and provides protection against external interference due to the foil shield.

Where is it used?

FTP cable is commonly used within network applications, usually for phones and cabling. Due to its ability to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI), it is usually found in applications where EMI can be a problem. This robust cable is ideal for industrial environments with high levels of electrical noise or interference, or with sensitive data being transmitted.

What are the advantages of FTP?

As well as reducing crosstalk, preventing electromagnetic interference, and protecting against external interference, FTPs come with many other benefits:

  • It is easy to handle and install
  • Cables are relatively inexpensive
  • FTP are widely available
  • They are a cost-effective solution
  • Resistant to temperature changes
  • Easy to route around obstacles or through tight spots
  • They are capable of high data transfer rates
  • Ideal for high-speed applications like Gigabit Ethernet
