You’ve picked your rack, chosen your switches and servers, and worked out your cabling. Then you reach the power distribution unit and realise it can go in one of two completely different ways, and nobody quite tells you which one is right for your setup.

It matters more than it used to. Uptime Institute’s 2025 Global Data Center Survey found that average rack power densities are still climbing, with more racks now sitting in the 10 to 30 kW range. The more power going into each rack, the more the way you distribute it is worth getting right first time.

This guide keeps it simple. Choosing between a vertical PDU and a horizontal PDU comes down to three things: rack space, cable routing and outlet count. Here’s how to weigh them up. Our short overview video offers a hands-on look.

What “Vertical (0U)” and “Horizontal” Actually Mean

A rack-mount PDU comes in two main form factors:

  • Vertical PDU (0U): mounts down the side of the rack in the zero-U channel, usually at the rear. Because it sits in space the rack isn’t otherwise using, it takes up no usable rack units at all.
  • Horizontal PDU: bolts across the rack like any other piece of kit, typically taking 1U or 2U of space.

Picture it this way: a vertical rack PDU runs top to bottom at the back, while a horizontal one sits flat across the front or rear.

Both do the same core job of feeding power to your equipment. The difference is where they live in the rack, and that has knock-on effects for space, cabling and how many outlets you get.

Space: Vertical Saves Rack Units, Horizontal Is Easier to Reach

If rack space is tight, vertical wins. A 0U PDU keeps every rack unit free for switches, servers and patch panels, which is exactly what you want in a full or fast-filling rack. For a densely populated PDU for server racks, that saved space adds up quickly.

Horizontal PDUs trade a little of that space for easier access. The outlets sit at the front at working height, so they’re simple to see, label and re-plug. That’s a real advantage when the rack is pushed against a wall or rear access is awkward.

One thing worth checking: vertical PDUs need enough depth in the rear channel to fit, and some shallow wall cabinets simply don’t have it. That’s why smaller comms rooms often default to horizontal. Cable Management: Keeping Airflow Clear

Cable routing is where the two form factors really diverge.

With a vertical PDU, power cables run down the same side as the unit, keeping the rack units clear and airflow cleaner. The trade-off is that a busy rear channel can get congested in a dense rack.

A horizontal PDU keeps power connections neat and obvious at the front, but it adds cable runs across the rack that can clutter and block airflow if they aren’t dressed properly.

There’s more to it than just tidiness: cabling that blocks airflow puts equipment under thermal stress, and poor airflow is a well-established contributor to avoidable downtime. Whichever PDU for network cabinets you choose, plan the cable routing at the same time, not as an afterthought.

Outlet Count and Rack Size

This is usually where the decision resolves itself.

Vertical PDUs tend to carry more outlets, often anywhere from 20 to 42 or more. That suits tall, densely populated racks where you have a lot of kit to feed. Horizontal PDUs usually offer fewer outlets, commonly 6 to 12 in a 1U or 2U chassis, which is plenty for a smaller cabinet or a handful of devices.

Given that racks are carrying more power and more equipment than they used to, size your network rack PDU for where the rack is heading and not just what’s in it today. Leaving a little headroom for growth saves a swap-out later.

As a rule of thumb, a small wall cabinet or shallow comms box points to a horizontal PDU, while a full-height, densely populated floor rack points to a vertical 0U PDU.
