If you purchased a DrayTek router between two and five years ago, it may be time to consider an upgrade. Recent security vulnerabilities have affected older models, leading to unexpected connection drops and router reboots. While firmware updates can provide temporary relief, many of these routers are reaching End-of-Life (EOL) status, meaning they will no longer receive crucial security patches or performance improvements.
Why Your DrayTek Router May Be at Risk
DrayTek has identified that certain routers are experiencing disruptions due to suspicious TCP connection attempts targeting devices with SSL VPN or Remote Management enabled but lacking adequate security measures. Older models that haven’t been updated are particularly vulnerable to these attacks, which can lead to frustrating connection drops and reboots.
What Can You Do?
If you’re currently using an older DrayTek model, there are a few actions recommend by DrayTek for customers who may be experiencing issues:
- Access Control List (ACL): Ensure that an ACL is always in place or any Remote Management is enabled (HTTPS, SSH, TR069).
- Firmware Upgrade: Resent events have highlighted that it is always important to maintain units on the latest firmware. Please update the firmware to the latest version. Firmware release notes and instructions are available on our support page.
- Service Disabling: If you do not need Remote Management or SSL VPN, we recommend disabling these services to reduce the risk of further disruptions. Follow best practice to disable any unused services (such as PPTP, IPSEC, SSL VPN, OpenVPN etc).

Is It Time for an Upgrade?
Even with firmware updates, older routers can struggle to keep up with the latest security threats and performance demands. Many of the affected models are now EOL, meaning they won’t receive further security updates. If your router is over 3 years old, upgrading to a newer model can provide:
- Enhanced security features to protect against evolving threats.
- Better performance for faster, more reliable internet connectivity.
- Long-term support with ongoing firmware updates and technical assistance.
