Every October, a wave of pink takes over the world. From pink ribbons adorning lapels to illuminated buildings bathed in pink light, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a global movement to raise awareness about one of the most common and, unfortunately, deadly cancers affecting women today. In this blog, we will delve into the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the statistics, risk factors, early detection, and ways you can get involved to support the cause.

The Significance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, often simply referred to as “Pinktober,” serves as a critical reminder of the impact breast cancer has on individuals, families, and communities worldwide. The main objectives are:

  1. Education: Increasing public awareness about breast cancer, its risk factors, prevention, and early detection methods.
  2. Support: Providing a platform for survivors and those currently battling breast cancer to share their stories and seek support.
  3. Fundraising: Encouraging donations to fund research, treatment, and support services for breast cancer patients.

The Statistics:

Breast cancer remains a significant health concern globally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, both in developed and developing countries. Some key statistics to be aware of include:

  1. Incidence: In 2020, there were an estimated 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer diagnosed worldwide.
  2. Mortality: Breast cancer is also responsible for a significant number of cancer-related deaths, with approximately 685,000 deaths recorded in 2020.
  3. Risk: While breast cancer can affect men and women, it is about 100 times more common in women.

How we’ve show our support at Comms Express in previous years:

One of our amazing staff members Katie has raised around £450 for breast cancer by running in the Newcastle half marathon with 5 members of her family.  She did it in an amazing 2 hours 50 mins despite terrific heat and thunderstorms😊 We are all proud of you Katie.

What we’re doing this year:

We are also holding a fundraising day on October 24th, where all staff members are encouraged to wear pink, and get involved in a bake sale to donate to our chosen charity, Breast Cancer Now’. If you would like to donate to this charity, click here

Conclusion:

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time to reflect on the impact of breast cancer and to take action. By spreading knowledge, supporting those affected by the disease, and contributing to research efforts, we can work together to reduce the burden of breast cancer and work towards a world where it no longer poses a threat to the lives of our loved ones. Let’s keep the pink light shining bright all year round!
