MU-MIMO – Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output
Before MU-MIMO, there was SU-MIMO (Single User Multiple Input Multiple Output). SU-MIMO only allowed communication with multiple devices one at a time, where as MU-MIMO now allows up to 8 devices to transmit simultaneously through multiple spatial streams. This feature allows large data to be streamed more efficently.
OFDMA – Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access
OFDMA allows shorter packets to be tramsmitted in parallel rather than forcing devices to wait their turn. Subdividing a data packet in this way reduces contention, cuts down on jitter, gives small but latency sensitive traffic a boost, and provides overall better network performance.
2.4 GHz Band Compatibility
Older Wi-Fi generations were created exclusiviely with the 5 GHz band, meaning many low IoT devices weren’t compatible. With Wi-Fi, the 2.4 GHz band is included allowing low latency, high capacity devices to be connected too.
1024-QAM – 1024 Quandrature Amplitude Modulation
With a higher quadrature amplitude modulation, Wi-Fi 6 can add another 2 bits of data per symbol transmitted in comparison to Wi-Fi 5. This impressive 25% increase in data rate ensures a high quality of service, particularly useful in high-traffic venues like sports arenas, train stations and convention centers.
Target Wake Time
No longer do devices have to fight to transmit at the same time, leaving data transfer as a quickly diminished free-for-all. With Wi-Fi 6’s Target Wake Time, devices are given a time slot to transmit their data, saving power and battery life outside this time whilst left in sleep mode. This schedule based communication environment also reduces network congestion and optimizes spectral efficiency.
BSS (Basic Service Set) Colouring
Wi-Fi 6 enables access points to set ‘colouring’ information to help minimize wireless interference. This colouring data enables the access points to identify signals from overlapping networks and ignore said signals to eliminate the interference.
