Why is Microsoft Upgrading?

There are a few refreshes that come with the Windows 11 upgrade, such as:

  • AI Integration
  • Improved Security
  • Better Organisation
  • Better for Gaming
  • Modern, sleek design

How does this affect you?

  • People with older computers: This may be an issue because Windows 11 has different hardware requirements than its predecessor, Windows 10. Therefore, old computers that are still good to use might not be able to be upgraded. This is mainly an issue because Windows 10 support will end on the 14th October 2025. Any support required after this date will have to be paid for.
  • For everyday users browsing, emailing, and completing office work: There may be certain display changes, such as the start button and taskbar – most of these changes will take a little bit of getting used to. However, this new design aims to boost productivity and make the tasks you need to carry out much easier.
  • For Gamers: Gamers will see notable improvements in performance with faster load times, richer colours, and smoother gameplay.
  • For businesses and IT professionals: Experience enhanced security against modern attacks and easier management.

What can you do to prepare for the update?

1. Check your device compatibility:

Microsoft has highlighted some hardware requirements to run Windows 11 – such as having at least 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and the ability to support the Trust Platform Module version 2.0, amongst other things. Find out from Microsoft if your device is compatible with their PC Health Check tool.

2. Organise and declutter your device:

Organise your files and declutter your system. Uninstall software & apps you don’t use. This frees up space and reduces the risk of conflicts during the Windows 11 update.

3. Back up your files:

Back up your important files to somewhere like OneDrive. With updates, there is always a risk of something going wrong and losing data. It’s better to be safe and back up your important documents just in case.

4. Update your drivers and firmware:

Update drivers and firmware to ensure high performance and proper functioning after the update.

Can you still get support for Windows 10?

Windows 10 support will end on October 14th, 2025. Without the support for Windows 10, you may be vulnerable to viruses and malware. If essential, you can pay for extended Windows 10 support while making arrangements to upgrade to Windows 11.
