Netgear Prosafe WAC740 is cheapest multi-gig wireless access point in the world

Netgear has introduced what it says is the world’s most affordable multi-gig 4 x 4 Wave 2 AC wireless access point.

The controlled-managed Prosafe WAC740 access point improves coverage and performance for growing and medium-sized enterprises, when paired with Netgear’s Prosafe M4200 Multi-Gigabit managed switch.

The access point delivers high performance with maximum client density for office space that requires reliable and long-range wireless connections to support business applications.

It is especially effective at servicing premium business-class connections and achieving seamless video streaming, Netgear says.

The WAC740 is based on Wave 2 802.11ac WiFi and operates with multi-user MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) for more efficient use of RF spectrum frequency and capacity to achieving a maximum combined throughput of 2.3Gbps.

Ultra-robust

Richard Jonker, vice president of product line management for SMB products at Netgear, said: "Our customers are looking for ultra-robust, reliable wireless solutions that leverage the improved performance enabled by the latest 802.11ac WiFi technology.

"[This makes] it easy for them to add more users to their networks quickly and in denser deployment scenarios.”

Mr Jonker went on to say that resellers and systems integrators looking for cost-effective solutions for their business customers will especially appreciate the overall value offered by the Prosafe WAC740.

The new access point is the most flexible on the market, Netgear also claims, coming with integrated 802.3at Power over Ethernet (PoE+) support.

The WAC740 can operate with two bonded 1G ethernet connections or with a single Multi-Gigabit 2.5G ethernet port that maximises the WiFi’s potential through a single wire when connected to a 2.5Gbps-capable switch.

Adopting this approach does away with the bottlenecks associated with standard gigabit ethernet, where throughput tops out at 1Gbps with a single port.

Up to 600 WAC740 access points can be configured and centrally managed through a single management dashboard with any Netgear wireless controller.

UK prices haven’t been confirmed yet but the Prosafe WAC740 will retail for $929 (£745) in the US.
