Netgear Orbi kills dead spots and maximises speeds

Internet providers have been getting a hard time from customers and consumer groups for falling short on their advertised top speeds for some time now.

However, those days could soon come to an end, thanks to Netgear’s latest WiFi system - Orbi - available from October.

Orbi, which looks like one of those air fresheners you leave dotted around your house, is a tri-band WiFi system designed to deliver maximum internet speeds across every inch of your property, no matter how many devices are connected.

It consists of a router and a satellite but you won’t need to be a specialist in satellite placement to the most out of Orbi because Netgear has strived to streamline installation as much as possible.

The set-up process requires the customer to simply connect the router to their internet modem or service provider gateway and place the satellite at the centre of their home. The result is a single, secure, high-performance WiFi network within minutes, covering up to 4,000 sq ft.

Challenges

Orbi’s Tri-band Wi-Fi works by emitting three signals - two 5Ghz and a standard 2.4 Ghz signal - but the second 5Ghz band is closed to create a WiFi connection for Orbi’s sole use. This lets the other two WiFi signals serve connected device with blazing-fast speeds of up to 3Gbps around the home.

Netgear says that Orbi’s development employed two decades worth of home WiFi innovation and addresses challenges in architectural design, dense building materials and large square footage.

David Henry, senior vice president of Netgear’s home networking devices, said people expect their home network to support more devices than ever before, which results in bandwidth being stretched thin.

"The strength of Orbi lies in its Tri-band WiFi, which enables you to enjoy the same level of connectivity throughout the entire home,” he added.

“Netgear Orbi delivers more high-speed WiFi connections to more devices through this new advanced WiFi technology that connects automatically and simultaneously to every WiFi-enabled device in the home."

Orbi will go sale in the UK from October, priced at £349.
