Demand rising' for Ethernet business services - Structure Cabling

The reach of Ethernet business services is continuing to broaden in 2014, one industry figure has claimed.

Michael Tighe, executive director of data services for Comcast Business Services - an arm of media giant Comcast - claimed that organisations of all sizes across a wide range of industries are upgrading their legacy networking technology.

They are adopting connectivity services based upon the Ethernet cabling standard, he told the Channel Partners Peer-to-Peer blog.

Mr Tighe noted that 2012 - as reported by Vertical Systems Group - was the first year that global bandwidth purchased for business Ethernet surpassed installed legacy services bandwidth.

"We saw this trend accelerate in 2013 and expect the gap to widen this year and beyond," he stated.

"As the availability of Ethernet business services continues to expand through fibre build-outs and new services like Ethernet-over-HFC, we hear from our partners and their customers that trying to run a business today on one or more 1.5 Mbps T1 lines is untenable."

They are recognising an urgent need for Ethernet cables, and trying to deploy the technology as quickly as possible, Mr Tighe claimed.

Indeed, he said the "unofficial theme" for business services in 2014 seems to be 'Ethernet, Ethernet, Ethernet' - such is the demand for the technology at present.

Mr Tighe predicted that 10Mbps Ethernet will be very much in demand, with many 1.5Mbps users choosing to upgrade their connections.

"Ethernet is quickly replacing legacy T1 lines as the technology of choice for businesses to connect their various offices in a single network and create a high-speed connection to the internet," the expert stated.

He explained that, since a standard T1 only offers 1.5Mbps, getting 10Mbps is "a big jump in performance" and is quickly becoming the standard.

"As organisations of all types and sizes select Ethernet, the drivers are pretty clear - boosting bandwidth to support Wi-Fi for employees and customers, connecting to cloud-based applications, and increasing use of private cloud dedicated interconnect," Mr Tighe stated.
