Cisco unveils new UCS S3260 secured storage server

Cisco has introduced a new storage-optimised server category that aims to address the needs of data intensive workloads.

The UCS S3260 Storage Server - which is the first model in the new S-Series - lets businesses access and analyse data quickly to generate insights in real time, and has been hailed for its versatility, rapid scalability and efficiency.

Cisco says the new server makes it simple to deploy and excellent for applications concerning big data, data protection, software-defined storage environments, media streaming, and content distribution.

Compared to traditional servers, the UCS S3260 is said to be more cost effective, consuming up to 59 per cent less power and reducing capital expenditure by around a third. The total cost of ownership is more than halved too, compared to public cloud solutions.

It is also more compact taking up 60 per cent less space despite being able to house 56 large form factor drivers with up to 28 solid state drives. It can cut out up to 70 per cent of cabling too.

The UCS S3260 uses dual-node capability based on the Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v4 series and features up to 600 Terabytes of local storage capacity per system as well as frictionless scaling up to Petabytes with UCS Manager, cache acceleration, and unified I/O connectivity for any type of data storage. Its high performance networking capabilities can achieve 160 Gbps of throughput.

This means organisations can move from inactive data in warehouses and clouds to dynamic applications on a cloud-scale platform with high-speed processing to activate, analyse and act on data in real time.

Traditionally, data is warehoused and accessed only when it is needed. As a result, industry analysts reckon that less than 40 per cent of stored enterprise data is ever used to create insight.

Companies that have piloted the new server so far say that the UCS S-Series has helped them provide a more cost-effective service, operate more efficiently and develop new products.
