Almost 1m people will use internet for first time today

Do you ever stop and wonder how quickly the internet has evolved in such a short space of time?

Well, you’re not the only one as a new report has revealed the level and rate of growth of the internet over the past five years.

A report from global social media agency We Are Social has found that since January 2012, the number of internet users has grown by 82 per cent. That works out at close to 1.7 billion additional people or nearly one million new users a day.

It’s crazy to think that almost one million people will use the internet for the first time today and we’re now at a point where more than half of the world’s population use the internet.

Social growth

The report also revealed that more than 1.3 billion people started using social media, with an uplift of 88 per cent over just five years; this equates to eight new users every second.

As well as going social, users were taking their internet with them too, as the number of active mobile connections skyrocketed to 2.2 billion, marking a growth of 37 per cent.

The number of mobile social media users has only been made public since January 2015 but from that point, there has been growth of more than 50 per cent in just two years as over 864 million people turned to using social platforms through a mobile device.

With 7.476 billion people on the planet at the start of 2017, 50.4 per cent of them are internet users in some form, while 37.3 per cent of the are active social media users and two-thirds of them use a mobile phone.

A statement from We Are Social included a slight disclaimer admitting that the purported growth in internet users may be down to more accurate and timely reporting as much as the addition of ‘new’ users. Still, fascinating stuff.
