Network cable innovation 'set to continue' - Network Cables

Network cables are continuing to evolve, offering greater opportunities for households, businesses and organisations to optimise their networks.

When Cat 5 cables were used as standard, the advent of Cat 5e cables enabled users to benefit from greater speeds and services quality.

In this context, the 'e' sands for 'enhanced' - meaning users of Cat 5e cables could expect to see an improvement in performance.

Likewise, improvements are being made to category 6 cables.

Cat 6 cables may be commonly used today - as the next advance on Cat 5e - but the introduction of Cat 6a cables gives customers new options.

The 'a' stands for 'augmented', pointing to the faster speeds available with the latest generation of cabling.

Writing for eHow, Stuart Robertson said there are several technical differences between Cat 6 and Cat 6a cables that give the latter "a distinct advantage".

"Cat 6 cable, for instance, provide up to 250MHz, whereas cat 6a doubles that, and provides 500MHz," he stated.

"This, along with improved insulation from interference, means that Cat 6a cable is capable of carrying a 10Gbps transmission over 100 metres of cable, whereas Cat 6 cable is only capable of 10Gbps over 37 metres of cable.

Mr Robertson said it is inevitable that there will be further technological advances in the coming months and years.

"Cat 6a will also be replaced, by either Cat 7a cable or fibre-optic cable," he predicted.

The affordability of fibre-optic cabling remains a constraint for many potential users at present, he suggested.

But over time, such solutions - which use a glass core to transmit light - will come on to more companies' radars, Mr Robertson believes.
