Major boost for Anglesey as fibre cables are activated - Network Cables

Fibre-optic cables are being deployed in every telephone exchange area on Anglesey through the public/private Superfast Cymru programme.

Brynsiencyn has become the latest community to benefit from an infrastructure upgrade, with the first fibre street cabinets now live in the area.

This means homes and businesses across the island - which lies off the coast of north-west Wales - are gaining access to super-fast broadband.

Some 60 per cent of premises on Anglesey have the potential to take advantage of next-generation connectivity solutions.

Under the Superfast Cymru scheme - a partnership between the Welsh and UK governments, the European Regional Development Fund and BT - 96 per cent of properties in Wales should have access to fibre broadband by spring 2016.

The Anglesey Enterprise Zone is a priority area for super-fast broadband under the programme.

Deputy minister for skills and technology Julie James said work is now taking place across the island, bringing super-fast broadband to premises in every exchange area.

"The Superfast Cymru programme is making excellent progress in bringing fast fibre across Wales, often in difficult and challenging conditions," she stated.

"The programme also highlights the benefits of European funding to Wales and is an example of how this funding is making a real difference on the ground."

Ed Hunt, Superfast Cymru programme director for BT, said his firm's engineers have worked "incredibly hard" to bring super-fast broadband access to 20 exchange areas on Anglesey.

He said he is "very proud" of what has been achieved so far on the infrastructure upgrade.

"Now that the network is well on its way to being completed on the island, I would urge homes and businesses to place their order with an internet service provider so that they can start taking advantage of these new superfast speeds," Mr Hunt stated.
