Netgear has revealed a new gaming-focussed high performance ethernet switch, due to go on sale worldwide in March.
The Nighthawk S8000 8-port Gaming and Media Switch (GS808E) extends the speed and performance of Netgear’s Nighthawk WiFi routers, which are already the fastest on the market.
By plugging video game consoles into the switch, gamers can enjoy super smooth gaming and streaming, enabling them to host a multi-user gaming party, HD video chats, surf the internet at blazing speeds or stream HD content from the internet or local storage - all without competing for bandwidth on the wireless network.
Netgear says that the Nighthawk S8000 Gigabit Ethernet Switch serves an aesthetic function as much as a technological one, with its sleek, durable premium zine alloy casing adding a stylish touch to any home.
Other key features include port-based and 802.1p/DSCP-based QoS (Quality of Service) for four levels of network traffic prioritisation, automatic denial-of-service (DoS) prevention, IGMP snooping support for multicast optimisation, loop detection and broadcast storm controls, rate limiting and priority queuing for better bandwidth allocation while port trunking/link aggregation (LAG) enables increased throughput beyond 1Gbps (up to 4Gbps) or to provide redundancy across the link.
There are also easy, one-click optimised configuration presets for gaming, media streaming or standard networking, plus two user-defined configurations.

Richard Jonker, vice president of service message block and switching product line management for Netgear, said the Nighthawk S8000 Gaming and Media Switch was “tackling the problem of overloaded wireless networks head-on”.
“4K video streaming, VR gaming and non-stop high-speed web surfing throughout the home are putting a severe burden on home networks that are struggling to provide reliable, lag-free connections,” he added.
“Beyond its sleek and stylish good looks, the Nighthawk S8000 Switch offers ultra-smooth, ultimate performance switching with a highly intuitive user interface that makes setup, advanced configuration and optimisation all stress-free.”
UK pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet but it is set to retail in the US at $99.99 (£82.32) when it launches in March.
