Storm season is coming — Well, in terms of safety to our data centres there is! And the culprit? Solar flares.
The solar flare is the most severe of all sun storms and looking back through history have wreaked havoc with our radio communications. Back in 1989 NASA reported an explosion from the sun so large it equated to thousands of nuclear bombs going off at once which caused a blackout of all radio communication devices in Quebec, Canada. Fast forward to March 2015 and the solar flare once again wreaked havoc to our North American friends when it caused an hour long blackout in USA.
These are two extreme cases but they happen more often than most people realise, and it’s because of this APC by Schneider Electric are spreading the word.
Caused by a build-up of magnetic energy being suddenly released within the sun’s atmosphere, it usually disperses into the void of space – but the radiation occasionally hits earth.
This absolute overload of magnetic energy creates havoc with power surges; over-currents and power outages. Mayhem right?
Sadly this can wreck the IT and communication setup companies work hard to install, resulting in lost revenue. Realistically the damage to data centres is unimaginable, but there are some ways to step up your guard and none other than APC’s uninterruptible power supplies.
They know their stuff and that’s exactly why they’re shouting about the use of their ranges in combatting solar flares.
Equipping companies with the likes of:
With these bits of kit at your disposal, is there any wonder that they’re confident of keeping your infrastructure up and running (while those round you lose out during downtime)
If those in the know are anything to go by, solar events in the future are highly probable. And whether its downtime caused by solar activity or an irregular power level, is it worth keeping your data centre unprotected?
Until next time.
