Firms considering deploying voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) solutions should ensure their network switches are adequate, it has been claimed.
Robert Merrill, creative writer at Telchemy, comments on TMCnet that organisation needs to carry out a range of steps before implementing the communications solution in order to gain the most benefit from it.
One of these, he explains, is to examine network switch statistics for any packet errors or excessive collisions and carry out any improvements to the equipment as needed.
In addition, he writes in the article: "If significant jitter or delay occurs on inter-site connections, this is a strong indicator that similar problems will occur during VoIP deployment.
"For desktop connectivity, ensure that you use 100BaseT Ethernet architecture."
Other tips for using VoIP include carrying out a trial period to identify any problem areas and undertaking regular reviews of the system after it is deployed.
Recently, TechWorld reported that experts at the Interop New York 2008 conference said businesses increasingly want their network switches and IT system ready for unified communication solutions.
