Polatis has debuted three new additions to its latching switches portfolio at the ECOC 2008 exhibition this week.

The company claims its latest switches will provide low levels of signal loss and decreased power consumption, while requiring no energy to maintain an optical signal connection.

Also, the switches require less than seven watts of electrical power to reconfigure a path.

Jim Miller, vice president of worldwide sales and business development at the company, believes the switches will have a big impact on the networking world.

"This product is set to dramatically reduce costs and improve network performance, enabling new investments in entirely new network architectures," he said.

ECOC claims to be the largest conference on optical communications in Europe, and one of the most respected and long-standing events of its kind, with this year's event being the 34th.

The exhibition takes place in the Belgian capital Brussels and runs for six days.
