A new range of green Ethernet chips from Broadcom could reduce power consumption in switches by as much as 40 per cent.
The development is excellent new for companies such as D-Link and Netgear, which will be able to create network equipment which is more environmentally friendly.
Broadcom's new 65 nanometre eco-sensitive single-chip gigabit Ethernet chips will help companies create green switches and will pave the way for the future of more environmentally friendly IT, the company states.
Hanh Nguyen, Broadcom's small business (SMB) switching director of marketing, said: "Broadcom's green SMB switches deliver business-class networking at price points that are appealing to the cost-sensitive SMB market."
He added that green technology is a major requirement in the current market as firms look to reduce operating costs and improve their environmental credentials.
According to ZDNet, IT managers should carefully monitor their companies' power usage and use power management techniques if they are to head towards a greener IT environment.
