Extreme Networks improves its Summit X650 switch - Value Switches Extreme Networks has launched a new energy-efficient version of its Summit X650 10GBASE-T switch.

The server rack mountable device is suitable for use in both cloud computing and managed hosting environments.

Extreme Networks claims its second-generation 10Gbps Ethernet switch consumes 200W less power than its previous incarnation and saves energy with help from Intel's new lower-powered 10GBASE-T adapter.

Harpreet Chadha, senior director of product management for Extreme Networks, said: "Power savings are critical to the data centre where space, heat and bandwidth have to be optimised."

The device uses standard RJ45connectors and can be added to an existing network with Cat5 and Cat6 cabling.

Earlier this year, Extreme Networks introduced a range of hibernating server equipment aimed at pushing down energy consumption in data centres.

The company claimed at the time that the new modules for its 8800 data centre chassis allow blade server systems to run at reduced temperatures.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19464704-ADNFCR
