Ethernet market 'to be hit by Wi-Fi success'

Ethernet market 'to be hit by Wi-Fi success'Wired ethernet cables are to be completely superseded by wireless technology within the next two to three years, it has been claimed.

In an interview with ZDNet, Paul DeBeasi, an expert from IT analyst firm Burton, argued that the availability of 802.11n - the latest version of Wi-Fi - would seriously impinge on the size of the Ethernet market in the short term, and even suggested that while wired ethernet would continue to be used in switch trunks and data centre networks the technology was on the way out.

The new 802.11n standard "will put pervasive mobility on the fast track", he told the technology news portal.

Given the trade-off between gigabit Ethernet and 802.11n, Mr DeBeasi believes firms will be considering changing their local area networks from wired to wireless in the very near future.
