Blade unveils new Ethernet switch

Blade unveils new Ethernet switchServer and storage solutions company Blade Network Technologies has unveiled a new ten gigabit Ethernet switch and SmartPanel for NEC SigmaBlade server systems.

The company, which also provides data and server racks, said the intelligent L3 switch would provide blade servers with "high-throughput, low-latency ten gigabit Ethernet connectivity".

Consuming less power than normal standalone ten gigabit switches, the new device is claimed to be highly energy efficient.

However, thanks to its high level of switching capacity it is able to handle bandwidth-intensive applications such as server virtualisation, voice over IP and video on demand, Blade stated.

Vikram Mehta, president and chief executive of Blade Network Technologies, described the switch as "the ideal blade networking solution for data centres that are overloaded with cables, crunched for bandwidth and space, and are seeking the utmost power and cooling efficiencies".

Following the launch of the new switch, the company has decided to host a free informational webinar on ten gigabit Ethernet featuring guest speakers from the networking industry.
