Pros and cons of server mounted switches

Pros and cons of server mounted switchesIT professional Rick Vanover has claimed there are two main approaches to cabling servers in large datacentres.

Writing for Tech Republic, Mr Vanover said the two approaches are to install patch panels in server racks and the other is to mount switches in them.

He stated that the pros for choosing switches over patch panels include the reduces risk of running out or ports in the rack, less potential for tampering and the ability to delegate connectivity.

Mr Vanover added that the cons were that switches could end up being under-used and a multitude of switches can make a network more difficult to manage.

He said: "Certain low-priority systems and racks may not need much in terms of connectivity."
