Network equipment manufacturer HP has announced plans to re-enter the tablet computer market. The firm, which suspended production of its Touchpad WebOS last summer, is set to launch a new device running Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system.
HP chief executive Meg Whitman announced the plans at the Global Influencer Summit 2012 in Shanghai.
She said the decision was "a strategic move" geared at capitalising on the rapid growth in tablet computer sales.
The new HP tablets are set to take advantage of cloud technology to deliver an enhanced user experience.
HP is also concentrating on boosting its switches business in 2012, with competition from the likes of Cisco continuing to increase.
