Sales of Ethernet switches have been hit by the ongoing global economic downturn as companies reign in their IT spending, it has been claimed.According to a new report by network equipment manufacturer the Dell'Oro Group (DG), the sale of Ethernet switches is expected to continue its decline.
DG claims that sales will fall by 19 per cent and will fail to recover to levels seen before the dot-com boom experienced almost a decade ago.
"Given the severity of the decline during the first quarter of 2009, it will be difficult for the market to rebound quickly to the revenue and port levels we saw in 2008," said director of Ethernet switch market research at DG Alan Weckel.
He added that while the market is set to start expanding in 2010, it will struggle to return to growth rates seen over the past five years.
Recently, Netgear launched a new range of switches aimed at small and medium-sized businesses.
