Networking giants are looking to a new form of technology known as network coding, according to media reports.
Website techworld.com reports that big names, including HP and Intel are beginning to embrace the technology.
Network coding, which was devised seven years ago by researchers, allows them to improve the efficiency of their products while boosting throughput by as much as 100 per cent.
It is thought that the method could help to revolutionise the networking industry.
Sumeet Sandhu, principal investigator for co-operative wireless communication at Intel Research, told the site: "It's like eavesdropping: You listen to what's going on around you, you form an opinion, and then you improve the overall throughput and capacity by actually remembering and using the information you have."
A spokesperson for Cisco said that, while the company does not offer specific network coding products at the moment, it is investigating it as a theory.
