Cisco to deliver IP telephony to Cambridge University

Cisco to deliver IP telephony to Cambridge UniversityCisco and BT will be providing the University of Cambridge with a new VoIP system over the next few months, it has been announced.

The multi-million pound contract will see 20,000 IP telephony handsets delivered to replace a previous system.

Students will be able to collaborate in more innovative ways thanks to the deployment of a converged video, voice and data network.

Dr Ian Lewis, director of the university's computing service, said: "As one of the world's leading universities, Cambridge is keen to attract and retain the very best students and researchers.

"Part of that involves providing thoroughly modern facilities that reflect our forward-looking relationship with technology."

John Dovey, vice president of BT iNet, said this would be the largest deployment of its kind in the education sector.

Scot Gardner, public sector operations director, Cisco UK & Ireland, added: "By embracing Cisco's Connected Learning vision, through this project the University of Cambridge is aiming to transform the way students, academics and administrators collaborate and ensure the University remains a globally-focused, student-centric institution well into the future."
