Cisco has announced the $330 million acquisition of WiMax vendor Navini Networks, according to reports.
The network company's decision has been made in order to cash in on the emerging market.
John Hindle, director of mobile service provider marketing, said that there was significant opportunity in these emerging markets where wired infrastructure is scarce.
He told IT Week: "This is a no-brainer. There's been a huge growth in cellular voice which means there's a lot of cell towers being rolled out.
"Combine this with the very low penetration of broadband, and the opportunity to hang WiMax kit from cell towers to provide broadband is obvious."
It is thought that Cisco will incorporate Navini's products into its Wireless Networking Business Unit in early 2008.
