Businessweek reports that 3Com has assured US investors that the minority interest sale will not mean they lose operational control.
US politicians have voiced their concern in the recent past over Chinese businesses buying major stakes in American companies.
3Com also announced last month that private equity firm Bain will buy 83.5 per cent of its voting shares.
