Ethernet switch market increases

Ethernet switch market increasesEthernet switch sales fell slightly in the last three months of 2007, according to new figures.

Figures from Infonetics Research's latest Ethernet and Application Switches report revealed a two per cent drop in sales between the third and fourth quarters of last year.

However, the study revealed a nine per cent rise for the year – going up to $17.3 billion worldwide in 2007.

Commenting on the figures, Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise voice and data, said: "The Ethernet switch market had an expected seasonally down quarter, although the market did slightly better than expectations."

He added that emerging segments did not "buck the trend" of seasonality, with the 1G unmanaged fixed configuration switches seeing steady growth between October and December last year.

Mr Machowinski added: "On the vendor front, 3Com's revenue share nearly doubled in 2007 after buying out Huawei's ownership interest in H3C. Aside from that, there weren't any significant high-level market share shake-ups in the switch market this year."
