Cisco to upgrade storage network device switches

Cisco to upgrade storage network device switchesCisco has released a set of boards, systems and software to upgrade its support for virtualisation in storage-area networks, meaning it will evolve its switches as well.

EETimes reports the company is to deliver three line cards for 8Gbit/s fibre channel supporting various port configurations.

The firm's services are incorporated into its VN-Link software which will be released simultaneously with VMWare's version 4.0 virtualisation software next year.

Due to the developments, Cisco is to upgrade its NX-OS operating system for storage network devices such as its MDS Fibre Channel switches and Nexus Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) switch, according to the news provider.

According to Deepak Mujal, a senior marketing manager at the company's data centre group, the firm has taken this direction to follow data centre trends.

"We do this in recognition that data centres are moving to a single fabric-based on FCoE," he told the publication.

In other news, Jim Duffy from Network World claims Cisco may be looking to enter the blade server market in a bid to become an overall IT player.
