Green Grid member 3Com has suggested a number of ways to ensure an organisation can benefit from energy-efficient IT practices.
The company's consultant engineer David Law, who represents the firm on the Green Grid, claimed that teleconferencing is one way businesses can be environmentally friendly.
Moving to Voiceover IP can reduce travel costs, which in turn is beneficial to the environment, Mr Law suggested.
Businesses can also utilise technologies such as Power over Ethernet, which allows networks to switch off power to IP phones when they are not being used by staff, he added.
Mr Law also indicated that if firms can be 'greener' if they choose a networking vendor which provides energy-efficiency improvements at "the chip, memory and power supply unit levels".
The Green Grid is a global consortium that aims to advance energy efficiency in data centres and business computing ecosystems.
In addition to 3Com, the grid's members include major industry players such as AT&T, Microsoft and IBM.
