Virgin trying fibre cables over electricity poles - Structure Cabling

Virgin trying fibre cables over electricity poles - Structure CablingVirgin Media has confirmed a scheme to trial broadband services delivered through fibre cables over existing electricity poles.

The Welsh village of Crumlin in Caerphilly will be the location for the tests, giving inhabitants access to internet speeds of up to 50Mb, as well as on demand television services.

By using existing electricity poles, the company does not have to invest in creating underground channels for the fibre cables.

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media, said: "We're already bringing broadband speeds of up to 50Mb, and soon 100Mb, to over half of all UK homes and are pushing the boundaries to ensure that homes right across the UK benefit from ultrafast broadband.

"Working in partnership with companies like Surf Telecoms, we can more rapidly and efficiently expand the reach of fibre optic networks to towns, villages and communities right across the UK."

The government recently confirmed that it will step in to help get broadband services to rural areas if telecommunications companies are unwilling to do so.
