New networking equipment costing £30 million and based on Microsoft Windows is being rolled out in the navy's type 23 frigates.
The type 23 frigate is set to become Britain's most prolific surface fleet ship in the foreseeable future and the new electronic brain will give the fleet a common operating platform.
According to the Ministry of Defence, HMS Montrose has entered a planned docking and refit period and will be the first ship to undergo the transformation.
The networking equipment, installed by BAE Systems as part of a 2006 contract, will include 12-kilometres of new network cables and replacement computers.
Commodore Graham Peach said: "This docking period is an important milestone in our programme to develop a common command system across the fleet."
He added that the Ministry of Defence had worked closely with BAE Systems to develop the upgrade.
Meanwhile, SES has won a £9 million contract to provide and install cabling and communication equipment at Manchester's Picadilly Station, according to H&V News.
