Internet service providers 'are not the police' - Cat5e Patch Panels Internet service providers (ISPs) should not have to act as a police force in order to crack down on illegal file sharing, ISPreview.co.uk has stated, which may interest businesses which use cat5e patch panels.

Mark Jackson, editor-in-chief at the website, commented that proposals from the government that would require ISPs to share the cost of protecting against copyright infringement is "deeply unfair".

"ISPs have argued long and hard for a beneficiary pays principle, which would see rights holders shoulder 100 per cent of the costs. As a result of this move, the vast majority of innocent internet users in the UK will have to pay higher prices for their broadband," he insisted.

On the subject of requiring ISPs to watch out for illegal downloads, Mr Jackson pointed out that if it was that simple, broadband providers would already be doing it.

"There are also legal issues with intercepting the content of a private transfer, which is something that only the police should be allowed to do," he added.

The Digital Economy Act is set to be debated further in both houses of parliament.
