New IEEE ethernet standard welcomed - Structure Cabling

New IEEE ethernet standard welcomed - Structure CablingThe Ethernet Alliance has welcomed the decision by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standards Association to ratify the 802.3ba standard.

Two extra speeds, 40GbE and 100GbE, will now be available, in addition to 10GbE, to meet the increasing bandwidth demand in switches and aggregation points, while new specifications will also cover ethernet cables

John D'Ambrosia, chair, IEEE P802.3ba 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s Ethernet Task Force, explained the importance of the latest developments.

He said: "Every jump in Ethernet speed has helped to meet the ever-growing bandwidth demands being placed upon the networking industry, and the ratification of the 40GbE and 100GbE standard is no different.

"From the incubation of the initial effort, to getting a study group launched, to its role in helping the industry reach consensus during key critical moments of the project, the Ethernet Alliance was there."

The IEEE is responsible for standards across a wide range of industries, including networking, power and nanotechnology.
