Increasing demand for sub-sea cabling solutions was the driving force behind JDR Cable Systems' decision to set aside £20 million for the creation of a new manufacturing plant in Hartlepool.
The Edinburgh-based firm, which has major contracts with renewable energy providers, said the plant, which was officially opened last month, was a major development in the company's growth plan.
Patrick Phelan, managing director of JDR, said: "The new JDR Hartlepool facility has been built in response to a significant growth in demand from customers for our products."
"The response from the market has been very positive and we are at an advanced stage of tendering for many other projects."
According to ZDNet's Heather Clancy, the issue of green cabling and network equipment is of growing importance in the IT sector.
She said that Corning Cabling Systems was a good example of a firm pioneering green fibre optic leads and cabling solutions.
