Experts have outlined the key things that need to take place in order to facilitate the success of fibre cable rollouts in Africa.
Pyramid Research has predicted that new undersea fibre cables to the continent, such as Seacom, Teams and EASSy, will more than double the broadband penetration rate in Africa between 2010 and 2015.
However, it has noted that improvements such as more bandwidth within terrestrial networks are needed in order to take advantage of these new connections.
Furthermore, it has suggested that more competition is needed among undersea cable providers, while the tax loads on devices such as laptops should also be lowered in order to promote usage of broadband networks.
Kerem Arsal, analyst for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Pyramid, said: "With the arrival of the new undersea cables on both sides of the continent and the abundance of international bandwidth these cables can supply, many African telecom markets have the potential to improve their poor broadband penetration rates and limited revenues and transform their competitive structures."
While fibre cables are the most common way of providing broadband across the globe, it is also possible to deliver services via satellites.
