Gordon Brown pledges broadband for all - Structure Cabling

Gordon Brown pledges broadband for all - Structure Cabling Gordon Brown has promised to help businesses provide broadband services to every home in the country.

The pledge comes despite claims that many homes will not receive broadband for at least a decade.

According to the PM, a fast internet connection is now as vital as electricity, gas and water and the technology will help the UK recover from the recession.

However, critics are concerned that Lord Carter's Digital Britain White Paper, which is to be published today, only calls for a minimum standard speed of 2Mbps, which is slower than most existing broadband connections.

Writing in the Times, Mr Brown said: "I am determined that Britain's digital infrastructure will be world class.

"The private sector is rightly leading the way and investing significant sums. But there is also a role for targeted, strategic action by government."

He added that the government must support industry in the roll-out of fibre optic cables for the next-generation of broadband.

Lord Carter wants everyone in the UK to have a fast enough internet connection by 2012 to be able to watch TV over it.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19221430-ADNFCR
