Europe is on the cusp of widespread deployment of fibre optic leads for data transmission directly to people's homes, it has been claimed.
According to Swiss network equipment manufacturer and cabling specialist Reichle & De-Massari (R&D), 2009 is the start of a new era of networking.
The firm claims that a number of network operators have launched investment programmes for next-generation broadband over the past few months and the industry will soon be pushing ahead with fibre to the home (FTTH) technology.
R&M chief executive officer Martin Reichle said the technology is not a pipe dream but a logical result of the huge growth in internet applications.
"FTTH means quality of life. For instance, it allows users to upload four gigabyte vacation movies onto the Internet just as fast as they can download full-length feature films," he added.
At the recent Congress of the FTTH Council Europe, held in Copenhagen, an Ovum study showed that health care and education systems can benefit from next-generation networking.
