Companies have been warned that standard commercial cabling is not suitable for harsh environments such as manufacturing and processing plants.
According to Belden, commercial-grade cabling and network equipment is not tough enough for use in such environments such as waste water treatment plants and shipyards.
Patricia Saito-Carvallo, Belden's business unit manager for industrial cable, said that in these environments standard structured cabling and connectors may be exposed to dust, moisture, vibrations and extreme temperatures.
She claimed that the firm's Tough Cat5e cables, its Enhanced Cat5e leads or Cat6 UTP or STP patch cables are suitable for these environments.
Ms Saito-Carvallo also recommended using its IP20 RJ45 patch leads, which will not be adversely affected by oil and dirt.
Belden produces thousands of wire and cable products all of which are manufactured to strict industry standards.
Its equipment is used in industrial networking, professional broadcasting and home automation applications, as well as in many high-tech security and alarm systems.
