Virgin outage 'caused by rats chewing fibre cables' - Fibre Cables

Virgin outage 'caused by rats chewing fibre cables' - Fibre CablesVirgin Media has asserted that recent internet downtime in the east of Scotland was caused by rats chewing through its fibre cables.

People in Kirkcaldy, Leven and Glenrothes were left with patchy access to the web on October 10th as a result of the rodents.

After the firm fixed the initial problem, there was another outage the following day as rats continued to target the shielding protecting the fibre optic cables.

A spokesperson for the firm commented: "We've now put additional measures in place to prevent further damage to our cables to avoid further disruption for our customers."

It is thought that up to 100 customers were affected by the outage caused by what Virgin described as "rodent damage".

Last week, Alastair Davidson, of communications infrastructure company Arquiva, said at a cross-party inquiry run by the Westminster Welsh Affairs committee that every home in Wales could get connections to the internet with download speeds of 2Mbps with an investment of £30 million.
